Shifting Winds and Strong Finishes at the Coast Guard Invitational

04.07.26

Day one of the J/70 Regatta delivered a true test of adaptability, as sailors faced a wildly shifting breeze that kept everyone on their toes. The morning began with a powerful north-northeast wind that quickly faded, only to veer east momentarily before building into a commanding southeasterly. In these dynamic conditions, five races were completed in winds ranging from 12 to 25 knots, with spinnakers flying in four of them. The combination of heavy air and tight competition led to a number of challenging moments across the fleet, making for an intense and unpredictable day on the water.

Day two brought a noticeable change in conditions, with a lighter 4–12 knot southwesterly breeze and a mostly slack tide on the Thames. The steadier, more tactical racing allowed teams to settle in, as four additional races were sailed to conclude the regatta. Altogether, the weekend showcased a wide range of conditions, rewarding versatility, resilience, and sharp decision-making from every crew.
