Sailing Information

About:

The Stevens Sailing Team is a club sports team that competes in the MAISA collegiate conference. We sail during the fall and the spring and we travel around the New Jersey/New York/Connecticut region for regattas. Our boats are kept at Shipyard Marina in Hoboken, which is also where practices are held.

Frequently Asked Questions:

When does the season start?
The season starts at the beginning of September and runs as long as possible into late October and early-to-mid November until it becomes too cold to practice. Practices resume around March and run until the end of the spring academic semester in May.

What is the regatta schedule like?
We generally have three to four regattas per semester. Regattas are scheduled for the entire weekend (Saturday and Sunday), but we don't always use both days. Generally, we finish regattas in one day. If a regatta isn't completed in one day (for example, due to inclement weather), it may run into Sunday as well.

How often does the team practice?
We practice once weekly on Fridays and sometimes on Saturdays on the Hudson River, weather permitting. We meet at the marina for practices.

What are practices like?
Practices are roughly two to three hours long. Practices get shorter as we get into fall and winter because we start losing daylight. For every practice, we meet at the marina to rig up, sail, and derig. During sailing, we will practice various techniques and drills such as tacking, gybing, starting, and hiking.

Do I have to participate both semesters?
While many members only join for the fall, we encourage participation for both semesters. It is not required to play for both semesters.

Does it cost money to participate?
Yes, it costs money to be on the team. We allow one free trial practice where members can "test the waters" to see if they want to join. Semesterly dues usually run around $250. Larger membership leads to smaller dues.

What do my dues fund?
Dues fund everything from league membership to marina costs to our coach to repairs to transportation.

Do we have jerseys and equipment?
We have some equipment, but it's limited. We have some PFDs and dry and wet suits available, but we encourage committed members to purchase their own gear. We provide all pinnies for the team for regattas.
