Under the bright lights of DeBaun Athletic Complex, the Stevens Ducks delivered a hard-fought 1–0
victory over the Iona Gaels on Saturday night. In a tightly contested match defined by defensive discipline
and midfield battles, Stevens found the breakthrough in the second half thanks to a clinical finish from
Andrew Lambert.
The opening half saw both teams feeling each other out, with possession shifting back and forth through
the midfield. Stevens applied early pressure, creating a few half-chances through quick passing
combinations on the wings. Iona responded with several dangerous counterattacks, but the Ducks' back
line remained organized and composed, clearing away crosses and limiting the Gaels to shots from
distance.
Stevens goalkeeper played a key role in maintaining the deadlock, making a sharp save midway through
the first half after an Iona forward slipped behind the defense for a close-range opportunity. The Ducks
nearly opened the scoring just before halftime when a curling shot from the top of the box narrowly sailed
over the crossbar.
The breakthrough came in the 63rd minute. After winning possession in the midfield,
Anthony Esteves
carried the ball forward and threaded a perfectly timed through pass between two Iona defenders. Andrew
Lambert timed his run well, collecting the pass in stride before calmly slotting the ball into the lower left
corner past the advancing goalkeeper. The DeBaun crowd erupted as the Ducks took the 1–0 lead.
Following the goal, Stevens shifted into a disciplined defensive shape, forcing Iona to attempt long balls
and speculative shots. The Gaels pushed numbers forward in the final minutes, earning a pair of late
corner kicks, but the Ducks' defense held firm. Several key clearances and strong tackles in the box
preserved the narrow advantage.
As the final whistle blew, Stevens celebrated a hard-earned shutout victory in front of their home
supporters. The Ducks' combination of organized defending, patient buildup play, and a decisive moment
of quality from Lambert and Esteves proved to be the difference on the night.
With the win, Stevens continues to build momentum as the season progresses, showing resilience and
teamwork under the DeBaun lights
