Montclair, New Jersey - Stevens had a much shorter bus ride on Sunday as they went to a tournament hosted by Montclair State University. 4 high intensity matches were played.
In the first game, Stevens A played Seton Hall, and there was truly destruction on the court. With
Ethan Chen making pinpoint accurate sets as usual, the offense was able to perform exceptionally well. At the same time, libero Justin Monohan ensured that the ball almost always stayed off the ground. This killer combination led to a devastating win for Stevens in the first set 25-8. Feeling overconfident from the last set, Stevens had a rough start with the second one. Multiple points were scored against them in a row, but they were able to get their head back in the game. The second set was won by Stevens 25-21.
The second game had Stevens B faced against Montclair State's B Team as well. Stevens started off with a good lead but was unable to hold it for long. It was a constant neck and neck clash with points being gained on both sides. Unfortunately, Stevens lost the first set 26-28. The first set was a wakeup call. Forceful swings by hitter Jake Roberts sent balls hurling down at great speeds. More well thought out hits by Enoch Chan left the opposition dumbfounded. This in addition to some crazy dumps by
Matei Moldoveanu allowed Stevens to win the second set with a much better 25-14. Stevens fought well in the third set, but the pressure got to them, and they were unable to keep up, losing 8-15 and losing the game.
Stevens B had back-to-back games. The third game saw them playing Seton Hall. The ball was a lot more alive in this game, and setter
Justin Cheng was running all around the court to send balls to his teammates. Once again, Stevens started off with a good lead but couldn't keep it together. Although it was another close set, they lost the first one 25-23. There were many long points, and the B Team must have been tired from two matches in a row. Though there were some great blocks by Zane Bacha and
Matthew Wrobel, great passes by
Shawn Aviles, and great hits by
Harris Pyo and
Miles Bird, the mistakes piled up. Stevens lost the second set 17-25.
The fourth and final match had Stevens A up against Montclair State's A Team, and they gave Stevens a greater run for their money than their first match. Both sides had some crazy spikes with unbelievable speed as well as incredible passes and sets. The crowd gasped at the insane height that Harry de Haas was able to achieve as he spiked the ball into the ground. Blockers
Benjamin Moks and Max Metzner absolutely denied some of the opposition's attacks, having Stevens take the first set 25-22. At this point, the entire team seemed in sync. Communication was at its best, and the team moved in unison with minimal mistakes. Spikes by
Rhys Robichaud and back row hits by Colin McDermott were impressive to watch while Stevens racked up points. MSU still put up a good fight, but Stevens prevailed, therefore winning the second set 25-20.
Based on the aftermath of Stevens' successes, the A Team will most likely qualify for regionals. Stevens as of now has one more scheduled match for this school year which will be this Saturday at Temple University.
