Rosemont, Pennsylvania - Stevens had their first tournament of the Spring 2023 semester this past weekend hosted by Rosemont College in Rosemont PA. A total of 4 matches were played.
The first match had the Stevens A team facing Rosemont's own team. Stevens dominated, winning both sets with an impressive 25-10 and 25-9, all made possible with accurate sets by
Ethan Chen, great receives and coverage by liberos
Brian Gao and
Justin Monahan, and monstrous blocks by
Max Metzner and
Benjamin Moks.
The next match features the Stevens B team, who faced off against Penn State. Though this team proved to be more difficult to handle than expected, Stevens still came out on top. With well placed hits by
Enoch Chan and strong swings by
Miles Bird and
Jake Roberts, setter
Justin Cheng allowed them to make great points, winning the first set 25-21. The second set did not go as smoothly as the first, but Stevens still pulled through. This set went to a deuce, but well-timed blocks by
Matei Moldoveanu and
Zane Bacha let Stevens take the lead and win 30-28.
The third match of the day once again had the formidable Stevens A team playing, but this time against Penn State who were previously defeated by Stevens. Though they posed more of a threat than the first team they played, the Stevens A team once again destroyed the competition. Both high and powerful spikes by hitters
Colin McDermott,
Harry de Haas, and
Rhys Robichaud had them once again winning both sets with still excellent scores of 25-12 and 25-14.
The fourth and final match of the day had the Stevens B team against Seton Hall. With great digs and receives by libero
Shawn Aviles and the occasional pinch serve by
Aaron Sprigle, Stevens took the first set 25-21. However, overconfidence seemed to get the better of the team. Some mistakes led to the opposing team gaining the momentum, and Stevens lost the second set 22-25. Both sides were tired from a long and drawn-out match at this point, so a shorter 15-point set was to be played. Both teams gave their all, but due to being nervous and exhausted, the Stevens B team unfortunately lost the final set 10-15.
Stevens will be seeing even more action this upcoming Sunday with a tournament at Stockton University.
