Stevens traveled to Temple over the weekend to play two matches against their men's club volleyball team.
In the first match, the Stevens A team played against Temple in 3 games. In the first game the Ducks got off to a slow start due to missed service errors and miscommunications on defense. However, as the set went on, outside hitters Alexei Nikiforov and Tim Lift were able to pick up on Temples habits and rack up multiple kills against the opposing block. But the efforts were not enough to overcome their earlier mistakes and Stevens lost the first game, 21-25.
In the second game, Stevens was able to play more to their strengths as freshman setter
Kevin Herbst brought the best out of middle blockers Max Metzner and
Paul Leible. Other players picked up momentum in the second set, including senior hitters Harry de Haas and
Jake Burger. A big difference in the second game was the defensive efforts by liberos Zack Salisbury and Brian Gao, as well as service aces from a couple different players. Stevens won the second set 25-21.
The third game of the match against Temple was to 15 points. The ducks started off strong, preserving their momentum from the last game, and once again relying on well placed hits and strong defensive foundation. However, the deciding factor of this third game was the unfortunate number of service aces committed by Stevens. The Stevens A team lost the third game 10-15, resulting in a frustrating 1-2 loss of the match.
Immediately following, the Stevens B team played in another best of 3 match against Temple as well.
The first game between the two teams was a deciding loss by the Ducks. Stevens found themselves unable to defend against Temple's middle attack and were frustrated by a number of service aces. Junior setter
Justin Cheng was able to get his team rallied around him by using hitters
Austin Hong and
Tyler Brunquell, although it was not enough to overcome the deficit from earlier in the set. The Ducks lost the first game 17-25.
For the second game, unfortunately Temple was able to get a number of service aces against the B team. However, the efforts by middle blockers Cary Qi and Matt Vaughan, as well as opposite hitter
Miles Bird, were enough to get some kills against the opponent. Freshman libero
Rhys Robichaud and Senior defensive specialist
Kendall Niles Peretz were able to get those Ducks defense organized enough to extend rallies. Even though, the Stevens B team would go on the lose the second game 21-25, the improvement they showed between games is a good sign for games to follow. At the end of the match, the Stevens B team lost 0-2 to Temple.
Despite losses from both the A and the B team, most of the players are confident that by the reducing their mistakes they will be much more successful for the rest of this season. Stevens will travel to Princeton and Stockton next weekend for two more events.
