This past weekend the Stevens Men's Club Volleyball Team participated in a tournament at Temple University. Stevens was in a pool of four teams with University of Pennsylvania, Saint Joseph's University, and a club team called Short Kids on the Block. All pool play matches were determined to be 2 sets to 25 points with no 3rd set.
The first match of the day for Stevens was Saint Joseph's University. Stevens started off slowly because the bus arrived late in the morning, and they had little time to warm up. St. Joe's had a solid libero and good pin hitters, while Stevens was missing a few key players including their libero, Zach Salisbury. In his absence, Jake Burger played libero, Miles Bird moved to outside, and Austin Hong played opposite. These changes tested the team's chemistry throughout the day. Justin Cheng delivered accurate sets to Miles Bird and Austin Hong, but the team was looking cold early in the morning. Stevens lost the first set 25-22. In the second set, Stevens started to catch fire, with Cary Qi hyping the team up with a few kills. Stevens won the second set 25-22.
Stevens final match of the day was against University of Pennsylvania. Stevens decided to change things up tactically, switching Jake Burger and Austin Hong's positions. Stevens played with all their energy because they did not want to be knocked out of playoff contention. Austin Hong had some nice digs at his new position, libero. But Jake Burger hadn't jumped all day and was unable to hit consistently at outside. With what seemed like a mental lapse, Stevens lost the first set 12-25. Stevens was fired up now. Kristopher Knight had some thundering blocks at middle to start the second set. Miles Bird had two successive line shot kills. Justin Cheng ran some saucy pipe sets. Stevens won the final set 25-17.
Unfortunately, Stevens did not make the playoffs because they ranked 3rd in pool play, and only the top two teams advance. However, it was a good learning experience for the team.
